You may transport cremated or hydrolyzed remains: By boat from any harbor in California By air over California coastal waters
2. Container Removal
Before scattering, the remains must be removed from any container. The law requires that only the remains themselves be released into the sea.
3. Distance from Shore
Scattering must occur: At least 500 yards offshore Within the open sea or inland navigable waters (not including lakes or streams) Scattering cannot be done from a beach, bridge, or pier
4. Filing with Local Registrar
California law also requires a verified statement to be submitted within 10 days of the scattering to the local registrar of births and deaths in the county nearest the scattering location. This statement must include: The full name of the deceased Date and place of death Date and location of the scattering Any other information the registrar may request
